Rowan County Masonic Scholarships announced

The Rowan County Masonic Scholarship Fund has awarded its 2011 scholarships to Leah Perkins, Joshua Schiemann and Elijah Wittum.
The scholarship awards are for $1,000.
Perkins is the daughter of Dwight and Nancy Perkins and attends Carson High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Future Teachers of America, vice president of the Student Council and a member of the Spirit Club.
Perkins has been a four year member of the girls volleyball team and was selected to the All County team this past year. She plans to attend Wingate University where she will pursue a degree in education.
Schiemann is the son of Mark and Sarah Schiemann. He attends Salisbury High School, where he is a member of the National Honor Society, Latin Club and Key Club, as well as a member of the swim and tennis teams. He is Drum Major for the marching band and a member of the Jazz Band. Ais an Eagle Scout, Shiemann hopes to attend Virginia Tech as an Architecture major.
Wittum is the son of Cynthia Wittum and attends West Rowan High School. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Junior Civitan Club, Student Government Association and Junior Classical League. He is active as a blood donor and blood donor recruiter. Wittum is an Eagle Scout and one of only 230 scouts nationally to have ever received the Boy Scout Medal of Honor with Cross Palms for bravery. He was a 2010 recipient of the Carnegie Medal for saving the life of an individual who was drowning in a flooded portion of the South Yadkin River. Elijah plans to attend either College of Charleston or Catawba College to pursue a biology degree.
The Rowan County Masonic Scholarship Fund is an endowment administered by the six Masonic Lodges in Rowan County: Fulton 99 and Andrew Jackson 576 in Salisbury, Scotch Ireland 154 in Cleveland, Eureka 283 in China Grove, Spencer 543 in Spencer and Keller Memorial 657 in Rockwell. The scholarship, awarded in April each year, is available to any resident of Rowan County pursuing higher education at an accredited institution. Applications can be obtained from any Lodge secretary or through area high school guidance counselors.
Since its inception in 1988, the fund has awarded 67 scholarships valued at $36,500. The Rowan County Masonic Scholarship Fund is a 501(c) corporation and tax deductible contributions may be made through any of the county’s Masonic Lodges or through David Potts, P.O. Box 971, Salisbury, NC 28145-0971.
