SALISBURY — A man was hit by a car as he was crossing East Innes Street around 5:45 p.m. today and is currently being treated at Rowan Regional Medical Center for a severe head injury.
A Rowan Helping Ministries employee at the scene identified the man as Arthur Feamster and said he is homeless.
The driver of a black Buick Rendezvous hit Feamster in the right-hand lane of East Innes Street. A witness said Feamster flew onto the hood of the car, smashed a part of the windshield, then slid off the car to the ground.
“I thought he was dead,” said the witness, who would not give her name.
The witness said she took the shirt off her back and tried to keep pressure on the wound to Feamster’s head. She said blood was coming out of his mouth and his head. So much blood was in the right-hand lane of the road that firefighters had to put down absorbant.
“They asked him his name, and he said ‘Arthur,’ ” the witness said. “Then they asked him to move his fingers, and he couldn’t.”
No details on Feamster’s condition were available at 7 p.m.
