GRANITE QUARRY — It was an un-four-gettable day for Meloney Ramos.
The North Rowan senior and Western Carolina signee guided the Cavaliers to their second county title in three years by winning four events, two on the track and two in the field.
Ramos, was gasping for air minutes after completing the 300 dash before realizing she had another event to win. Time waits for no one, not even track stars such as Ramos, the sprint MVP of the meet.
“I’m used to it,” she said. “I usually do four events every time. I’m glad I got a break so I can recover.”
Thanks to the meet being delayed a day, Ramos also got a break from her senior project at school, her with the subject dealing with — what else — track.
“I was pretty happy about that,” Ramos remarked.
The Cavs won walking away from second-place Salisbury with 169 points. They finished 1-2-3 in the triple jump and 200 run and 1-2 in the 100 hurdles with Teaunna Cuthbertson following Ramos.
“It’s one of those situations where she’s a worker and she gets the benefit of the work she’s put in,” said North coach Robert Steele of Ramos. “I’ve known Meloney and she’s been running since nine years old. She’s always been a hard worker and been very dedicated.”
Ramos won the 100 hurdles (14:64), long jump (17-2), triple jump (36-4) and 300 hurdles (46.2).
Alisha Bradshaw, the meet’s field MVP, threw 41-4, more than 10 feet ahead of the competition. Her 134-6 toss in the discus was even more dominating, out-throwing everyone else by more than 30 feet.
Salisbury’s Katherine Shields won the 1600 (5:35) and 3200 (12:51) to capture distance MVP. Her 1600 times was 10 seconds short of a personal best.
“Today, since I was by myself in front, I had to focus on pushing myself,” Shields said. “I had gone so hard in the mile that I was so tired by the two-mile.”
Katherine’s sister Emily won 800 run in 2:26, edging out Carson’s Sierra Zemanick by two seconds.
North Rowan pulled away with winning the 4×100 (Tameisha Allen, Christen Jones, Teaunna Cuthbertson, Tianka White) 4×200 (Allen, Jones, Yasarian Bush, Akevia Charleston), and 4×400 (Kiara Davis, Taylor Godfrey, Tenehsa Dickerson, Charleston) relays. Bush (25.36), Allen (26.24) and Jones (26.72) were the top 3 finishers in the 200. Allen (12.42) and Jones (12.50) were 1-2 in the 100.
“We knew that to win the championship, we’re going to have to go through East Rowan,” Steele said. “The kids responded real well to the challenge.”
East Rowan’s 4×800 relay (11:30) won first place as did Melissa Greene (4-10) in the high jump.
