Teacher’s assistant charged with assault

SALISBURY ó A teacherís assistant in the program for exceptional children at Knollwood Elementary School resigned Friday after being charged with assaulting a handicapped student.
Janet W. Pence, of 190 Morning Glory Lane, was released on a written promise to appear in court May 11, according to the Rowan County Sheriffís Office.
An arrest warrant served Friday by Detective Clint Mauldin alleges Pence ěunlawfully and willfully did assault and strikeî a student Monday by ěgrabbing the left leg with sufficient force to cause injury.î
Rita Foil, public information officer for Rowan-Salisbury School System, said school officials contacted law enforcement after receiving a complaint that ěa teacher assistant was acting inappropriately with a student.î
ěWe will continue to cooperate with law enforcement on this matter,î Foil said in an email to the Post.
Pence could not be reached for comment.
