LANDIS ó Only one person spoke during a public hearing Monday concerning a proposed low speed vehicle ordinance, which the town board deferred to a later date.
The ordinance would mean vehicles like golf carts would not be allowed to exceed 28 miles per hour on certain roads and public streets.
The Landis board looked at the low speed vehicle ordinance China Grove recently adopted, with a few changes.
Landis resident Sam Deadmon spoke in opposition to the ordinance saying he didnít understand why the town would allow more vehicles on the road. He added it would not be safe.
ěWhatís the benefit we would see?î he asked.
Deadmon said there are already people, young and old, who ride golf carts and four-wheelers on the road, including U.S. 29.
The board discussed during its last month meeting about elements they liked of the China Grove ordinance and what changes they would make.
One of those points was applying an annual sticker fee, but not charging as much as their neighbors.
Owners must buy and maintain liability insurance for at least the minimum amount required by the state. The operator of the vehicle must be at least 16 and have a valid state driverís license. All vehicles must have a permit of operation issued by the town.
Mayor Dennis Brown tabled the matter.
ěWe will take your comments in consideration,î Brown told Deadmon.
The board of aldermen also:
Received four bid finalists concerning the townís mowing contract.
ěWe threw out the bids that didnít meet the requirements and those that were too high. Some bids were quite close,î said Public Works Director Steve Rowland.
Brown said the board should review the four finalists and make a decision in May.
Alderman Tony Hilton wanted to know when the current contract ended.
Rowland said June 30.
Set the budget workshop for Monday at 6 p.m.
Postponed a decision on roofing materials for the pavilion.
Parks Director Andrew Morgan said he had some figures on shingle or a metal roof, but if the board chose metal, it would limit other projects at the pavilion.
The money is in the budget for a new roof, he said.
The board will further discuss the pavilion at its budget session.
