Thursday night the newly developed Police Interdiction Team of the Salisbury Police Department charged a man with crack cocaine and marijuana possession and later found he brought marijuana into the Rowan County jail.
Police said Frank Belton Jr. was driving down North Long Street without his headlights on and PIT officers stopped him.
Police reported a strong odor of marijuana was coming from the car and asked Belton to step outside. When he did, Officer Wanda Gibson saw Belton lift his foot off a $100 bill on the floorboard and officers searched the car.
Found in the center console was a set of digital scales. Inside the $100 bill was a large white rock, which officers believed to be cocaine, the report said. Officers arrested Belton and the search continued, with marijuana residue found in the center console.
Belton was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver cocaine, maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was given a $5,000 secured bond.
Once searched in jail, officers found a small bag of marijuana in his sock, and he was additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance on the premises of a penal institution. His bond was increased to $7,500.
Belton made his first appearance in court today.
