April Relay for Life events start Saturday at Y

SALISBURY ó The following are April Relay for Life events:
J.F. Hurley YMCA and Relay For Life of Rowan County are partnering to benefit the Yís ěWe Build Peopleî program and the American Cancer Society with ěBounce into Spring,î from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hurley Y, 828 W. Jake Alexander Blvd.
Relay teams will have food and goods for donations to Relay and the donations for the tables will go to the Yís campaign. The whole family can enjoy food, basketball competitions, inflatables, chair massages, games, crafts and more.
The First Baptist Church of Salisbury team will host a coffee-house style Gospel Concert for Relay For Life in the fellowship hall on Sunday evening from 6 p.m to 7:30 p.m. The church is located at 223 N. Fulton St. The suggested donation is $10 per person.
Salisburyís own Matthew Weaver will be the featured performer. The concern will also include music featuring local guitarist Paul Hill of Gold Hill. Other musicians and singers will also participate. Light refreshments will be served. All proceeds will benefit Relay For Life.
The American Cancer Society and Rowan Regional Medical Center offer Look Good… Feel Better classes for female cancer survivors in active treatment.
The next session is 4 p.m.-6 p.m. Monday, where licensed and trained volunteer cosmetologists will teach beauty techniques in a 12-step skin care and makeup program designed to help reduce the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatments.
Products used are donated by the cosmetic industry. Women will also learn about hair loss, wigs, scarves and other accessories.

Find a bargain and fund cancer research by going to a Relay For Life Yard Sale hosted by the Food Lion A/R team from 8 a.m. to noon on April 9 at 7789 Stokes Ferry Road.

Several Relay For Life teams will participate in Downtown Salisburyís Earth Night Out on Friday, April 15.
Rowan County Fairgrounds where the Bostian Heights Fire Department hosts a Relay For Life Concert on Friday, April 15, featuring country band Darrell Harwood and the CWB.
Doors open at 7 p.m., the concert begins at 8 p.m. Donation are $10 for adults and free for children 12 and under. Tickets are required for entrance. Contact the fire department for information at 704-857-0208.
Relay For Life will participate in Belk Charity Sale Day from 6-10 a.m. on Saturday, April 16.

The Christiana Lutheran Church team is hosting the Applebeeís Flapjack Breakfast, from 7-10 a.m. Saturday, April 16.

The Fit Community 10K Run takes place at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at City Park Center/City Park Shelter No. 1, followed by a 5K Walk at 8:05 a.m. and a Fun Run for ages 12 and under at 8:10 a.m.
The city of Salisbury, Salisbury Rowan Runners and Salisbury Parks and Recreation will co-sponsor. Door prizes and awards will be distributed at 9:45 a.m.
The entry fee is $25 if pre-registered before April 12, $30 on race day and $10 for the Fun Run for 12 and under.

Fifth Annual Relay For Life Car Show on Saturday, April 16, hosted by Faith Cruisers at Faith Legion Park.
Bring your car, truck or motorcycle to the event, which is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The fee is $15 if you pre-register or $20 on the day of the event.

Bring your favorite golf buddies to Corbin Hills Golf Club in Salisbury on Saturday, April 16, for the Sixth Annual Liviní Good Livengood Relay For Life Golf Tournament.
Have a hamburger and hot dog lunch at 12:30 p.m. followed by the shotgun start to play at 2 p.m.
The format is captainís choice. Select a four-member team and register by calling Jeff at 704-279-8348 or Pete at 704-279-7057. The fee is $50 per player and $200 per team. Prizes will be awarded. The tournament is limited to 32 teams, so register early.
A special ěI Can Copeî session for cancer survivors and their caregivers will be presented on from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at the J.F. Hurley YMCA, 828 W Jake Alexander Blvd.
Topics include Dimensions of Wellness, How to Handle Stress, Benefits of Nutrition: General Advice about Eating, Prayer and Spirituality: What is It?, and Answers to Questions Often Asked by Cancer Patients and Survivors.

The 2011 Survivor and Caregiver Dinner at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at J. F. Hurley YMCA. Dinner is free for cancer survivors and $5 for a guest. Registration/ sign-in begins at 4 p.m. and the dinner begins at 5 p.m.
