Post column: Making an impact

Iím a strong believer in making an impact. I think itís important to make an impact on your school, community and world. As I look forward to my future career and education plans, Iím often asking myself, what kind of impact am I making on the world?
However, this Saturday at 8:30 am, Iíll be asking myself what I can do to make less of an impact. The impact Iím referring to, in this case, is the impact each of us has on our environment.
This Saturday, my family and I will be participating in Earth Hour. For one hour on March 26 at 8:30 a.m., weíll turn off our lights for one hour to conserve energy and become more committed to sustainability.
For many of us, thinking about the impact we have on our environment is something we keep in the back of our mind. Itís more difficult to really commit ourselves to saving what we have left of our planet.
Going green is definitely becoming a trend, but I hope itís one that is here to stay and helps people become more aware of how scarce our resources truly are and how important it is to protect our world and respect the Earth.
Lately, Iíve found new ways to respect the world we live in and protect our environment. There are so many different things that we can become more sustainable in our everyday lives.
These tasks are easy and only consist of making a small effort to stop and think about the impact weíre making on our planet. Theyíre small changes we make in our everyday lives to reduce our impact and become more sustainable. Itís also easy, however, to forget why itís so important to make these changes.
Itís hard to forget why these changes are important when we stop to look around and realize what nature has to offer.
Lately, Iíve taken to going on hikes with friends. There are so many different places to explore and find out how amazing nature truly is.
Between the mountains and the ocean, North Carolina is the ideal place for making these discoveries. I feel lucky to live in a place with so much natural beauty.
After stopping for a moment to appreciate nature and everything there is to discover, becoming more sustainable is an easy choice to make. At this point, becoming more aware and more sustainable is choice we all must make in order to save our planet.
