There were more honors for Salisbury’s girls basketball team when the All-CCC team was released on Sunday.
Salisbury’s Ayanna Holmes, Olivia Rankin, Ashia Holmes, Brielle Blaire and Jessica Heilig were named to the All-CCC team. Senior Ashia Holmes was named CCC Player of the Year.
Salisbury’s Chris McNeil, who led the Hornets to the 2A state championship, was named CCC Coach of the Year.
Other members of the All-CCC team included Central Davidson’s Jazmine Charles (player of the year runner-up), Paige Chavis and Chandler Young; Lexington’s Jasmine Carter and Jessica Lazenby, and Thomasville’s Christina Carter and Alexis Lambert.
Lexington’s Lamont Johnson was runner-up for coaching honors.
Salisbury’s Justin Morgan was named CCC Coach of the Year for boys basketball, and the Hornets placed John Knox, Darien Rankin and Alex Weant on the All-CCC team.
Others making All-CCC were Central Davidson’s Chris Pompey; East Davidson’s Blake Dodd and Taylor Warren; Lexington’s Al Challenger, Codie Boger and Quandarious Crump; Thomasville’s Andre Irving and Isaiah Williams, and West Davidson’s Jordan Cameron.
Warren was named CCC Player of the Year, with Lexington’s Al Challenger runner-up in the voting.
Thomasville’s Tony Clark was runner-up to Morgan for coaching honors.
All-SPC boys hoops
A.L. Brown senior guard Teven Jones was named SPC Player of the Year. Jones averaged 21.6 points per game.
“It’s a great honor,” A.L. Brown coach Shelwyn Klutz said. “There were so many outstanding players in our league this season.”
Northwest Cabarrus coach Daniel Jenkins had his own candidate in Ameer Jackson, but he had no complaints about Jones receiving the award.
“He was the one big scoring threat Kannapolis had,” Jenkins said. “He was the focus of the defense every night, and he still would score 20. That’s a pretty special player.”
Klutz said that Jones, who has excellent grades and a solid SAT score, is being recruited mostly by Division II schools, but he hasn’t made a commitment yet.
A.L. Brown’s Parish Smith, a senior post man, joined Jones on the All-SPC team.
College baseball
Pfeiffer lost to No. 23 Limestone 4-2 on Sunday and dropped two out of three to the Saints.
John McDaniel (Davie) pitched a complete game and struck out six but took the loss.
Zach Howard (Davie) had a hit and scored for Limestone.
Liberty’s Keegan Linza (North Rowan) enjoyed another great start on Friday. Linza (3-0) pitched a complete game in a 5-2 win against Rutgers. He struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.
Appalachian State lost to Elon 16-10 on Sunday. Playing left field and center field, Preston Troutman (East Rowan) had two hits for the Mountaineers. Trey Holmes (East) knocked in a run, and Noah Holmes (East) went 1-for-1.
High Point’s Maverick Miles (South Rowan) got his first college RBI when he walked with the bases loaded in a romp against North Carolina A&T on Friday.
Charlotte’s Justin Roland (East) had three hits in a 9-1 win against Ball State on Saturday.
On Sunday, Ross Steedley (East) had two hits for the 49ers, including a big RBI single as the 49ers rallied for a 5-4 victory.
College softball
At the CIAA Roundup, Livingstone’s softball team lost to Elizabeth City State 8-5 on Sunday, fell to Bowie State 15-0 and dropped a 17-7 tussle with Virginia Union.
Livingstone (4-6, 1-5) plays today against St. Paul’s at the Roundup.
Catawba lost two games in Florence, S.C. on Sunday, falling 4-0 to Rollins and 7-6 to Hillsdale.
Prep baseball
Northwest Cabarrus scored eight runs in the first two innings and crushed Concord 11-1 on Friday.
Rob Bain pitched a complete game for the Trojans and enjoyed one three-pitch inning.
Weston Smith and Jarrin Hogue had the key hits for the Trojans. Smith’s two-run single in the first got the Trojans started.
West Iredell used an eight-run fifth to batter West Rowan 11-1 in NPC action on Friday.
Sam Laws dominated on the mound for the Warriors, pitching six innings and fanning seven. Jordan Gamble and Shawn Grant had three hits each for the winners.
West Rowan fell to 0-6 and 0-2 in the NPC.
Prep softball
South Rowan lost 15-8 to Central Cabarrus despite homers by Nicole Barringer and Kayla Corriher.
Barringer, Katherine Starnes and Mackenzie Dabbs had doubles for the Raiders.
Barringer finished with three hits, Dabbs had two, and Corriher had two RBIs.
Kim Fesperman went the distance in the circle.
7th-grade hoops
Action resumes today in the middle school basketball tournament at Knox. Games are at 4:30, 6 and 7. See Scoreboard.
Local golf
The McCanless Couples played with a two-man Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.
Sharon Miller and Charlie Gillispie won the event.
Mary Seaford and Yvonne Barger placed second. Jeff and Tabitha Warren took third place in a scorecard playoff.
Tim Earnhardt won closest to the pin and Jeff Warren won the longest putt.
The Couples will now play at 3 p.m on Sundays due to the time change.
Mixed Martial Arts
Rodney Wallace (Catawba) lost his recent MFC fight in Canada to Emanuel Newton on a second-round choke hold. Wallace, who still holds Catawba rushing records, is 10-4.
Pro boxing
Classic Entertainment & Sports boxing promoter Jimmy Burchfield is excited about undefeated welterweight Dominic DeSanto (North Rowan), who is fighting on April 1 in Mashantucket, Conn.
“DeSanto is going to become a household name real soon, not just in New England, but throughout the world,” Burchfield said. “His speed and power is unmatched. This is a real exciting prospect.”
Pro golf
Salisbury resident Frank Adams shot 69-72 — 141 in his first two rounds in the El Jadida Classic, a stop in Morocco on the egolf Pro Tour.
