Salisbury Police responded to a Montgomery Avenue home Monday after dispatchers indicated a juvenile had set fire to a yard.
Mary Marie Smith reported a child, 9, whose name cannot be released, had hit a mailbox with a rock. The boy grabbed a gas container and poured the contents onto her grass and porch. A fire ignited in a small patch of grass beside the homeowner’s property.
The homeowner put the fire out, a report said.
The child ran when police arrived.
The incident was over a “screaming match” between the neighborhood children, said Police Lt. Shelia Lingle.
