Area sports briefs: Catawba, Livingstone men win

Freshman Keon Moore scored 28 points, 21 in the first half, to lead Catawba to an 85-75 SAC road win at Carson-Newman on Saturday night.
Catawba jumped all over Carson-Newman in the first half and built as much as a 20-point lead. Carson-Newman rallied and caught up in the second half, but the Indians took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Lee Martin.
The Indians (8-10, 4-6) own a modest two-game winning streak, only their second such streak of the season.
Point guard Dominick Reid had 14 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Indians. Kejuan Mayo, another freshman, started and contributed 14 points and nine boards.
Anthony Sullivan scored 16 points for Carson-Newman (8-10, 5-5).

n Livingstone men win
Livingstoneís menís basketball team rallied for a 61-58 win against Shaw at Trent Gym on Saturday.
Livingstone (10-5, 5-3 CIAA) evened its divisional mark at 1-1.
Shaw (11-7, 4-5) led 56-49 with 5:14 remaining, but the Blue Bears tied the score at 56 on Trone Jacksonís coast-to-coast layup with 56 seconds left.
Trailing 58-57, Jackson made another attacking layup for a one-point Blue Bear lead with 13 seconds left.
Shaw missed inside on its final possession, and Darius Cox cleaned the boards for the Blue Bears and made two free throws for the final margin.
Aaron Wilson led Livingstone with 14 points while Jackson had 10. Tyler Johnson had nine rebounds and eight points.
The Blue Bears will stay at home on Monday night to face the Falcons of St. Augustineís.

n Pfeiffer men lose
Nigel Munson hit four free throws in the final nine seconds to lead the University of the District of Columbia to a 97-96 win against Pfeifferís menís basketball team at the UDC Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
All-American Chris Woods scored 38 points for the Falcons (7-10), including 31 in the second half. He also pulled down 13 rebounds.
Jeff Pettiway added 19 points for Pfeiffer.
Brandon Herbert hit six 3-pointers and scored 27 points for the Firebirds (6-12).
n Womenís basketball
Livingstoneís womenís basketball team overcame a rough start ó spotting visiting Shaw a 10-0 lead ó and won 83-72 on Saturday night.
The Blue Bears (11-4, 6-2 CIAA) stayed unbeaten at Trent Gym and evened their record at 1-1 in the Southern Division.
Shaw (12-8, 5-4) trailed by nine at halftime. The visitors made a second-half comeback to tighten things up, but Livingstone sealed the victory with solid foul shooting.
Rashida Elbourne hit four 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead the Blue Bears. Brittany Wright had 18 points and nine boards. Khalia Boston scored a season-high 14 points.
n Carson-Newmanís women used a 15-2 run early in the second half to beat Catawba 70-56 in a SAC game played in Jefferson City, Tenn., on Saturday.
Johnna Foster scored a career-high 12 points for the Indians (11-9, 5-5 SAC), all on 3-pointers. Dana Hicks had 11 points and eight boards.
Courdne Miles went 8-for-8 from the field for the Eagles (8-12, 4-6) and had 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Catawba shot just 28 percent from the field and dropped its fifth straight league game after a 5-0 start.
n Brittany Cox scored 27 points and Christina Harvey pulled down 19 rebounds to lead Pfeifferís womenís basketball team (7-10, 6-5) to a 67-61 Conference Carolinas victory against Converse at Merner Gym on Saturday.
n Jayvee boys basketball
Salisburyís jayvee boys basketball team beat Thomasville 60-44 on Saturday.
Jacquez Finger led the Hornets (7-6, 4-2 CCC) with 15 points, Quan Davis scored 12, and Eric Edwards had 10.
n Jayvee girls basketball
East Rowanís jayvee girls basketball team beat Statesville 46-20 on Friday.
Bobbi Thomas had 17 rebounds for the Mustangs.
Allyson Mills scored 11 points, Lindsay Gobble had 10, Bobbi Thomas scored eight, and Lauren Thomas had seven.
n Salisburyís jayvee girls kept their perfect record intact with a 57-17 victory against Thomasville on Saturday.
The Hornets (12-0, 6-0 CCC) were led by Monifa Angleís 19 points.
Daterria Connor and Patreece Lattimore scored 16 each.
n Dolphins vs. Jaguars
Sacred Heartís varsity girls basketball team topped Salisbury Academy 22-7.
The Dolphins (18-5, 6-0) broke it open after a close first half. Erin Ansbro had 10 points, while Meghan Hedgepeth and Caroline Parrott had six rebounds each. Kaytee Leonguerero and Annie Habeeb scored 5 points each. Sara Bess Hallett and Breya Philpot led the defense.
The Jaguars (7-9, 2-5) played with only five players due to illness. They were led by Carly Roswarski, Isabella Rusher, and Ann Rollins Johnson.
n Sacred Heartís boys (11-13, 3-3) knocked off the first-place Jaguars 23-22 on Christian Hesterís stickback with two seconds left.
Salisbury Academy (8-6, 5-2) played without ill center Asa Hollingsworth.
Sam McNeely scored 15 points for Salisbury Academy, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 13 seconds left.
Coleman Bergsma had 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. Luke Combs had five points and five assists, for SA.
Hester finished with eight points and 16 rebounds for the Dolphins.
Max Fisher and Reilly Gokey had six points and five rebounds each, and Chili Chilton had six boards. Joseph Harrisonís 3 pointer kept the Dolphins close, and Walker Latimer provided some tough defense.
The Dolphins play Statesville Christian in a doubleheader at the Boyd Dolphin Tank on Monday.

Phenoms AAU basketball tryouts for boys in grades 2-5 are today from 2-3:30 at Competitive Sports, Corporate Circle off Julian Road.
Skills training for boys and girls grades 2-6 is from 3:30-5 and training for boys and girls in grades 7-12 is from 5-6:30 p.m.
