A 'Classic' Christmas tradition

For high school basketball fans, the Sam Moir Christmas Classic at Catawba’s Goodman Gym is a holiday tradition. The classic is in its 38th year.
The tournament was begun by former Catawba coach Sam Moir and several local high school coaches in 1971 and has been held every year except 1988, when it was a victim of the measles epidemic. A girls bracket became part of the excitement in 1975.
This year’s tournament started Monday and continues today and Wednesday. It includes boys and girls teams from all six Rowan County high schools and Davie County.
The games start at noon daily and continue through the evening. The girls championship game will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by the boys championship at 8 p.m.
Admission is $6 per day.
Sponsors are Cheerwine and F&M Bank.
