College basketball roundup …ATLANTA ó Ryan Reid loved the game plan Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton designed to defend Georgia Tech.
Match size with size. Seal off passing lanes. Make the Yellow Jackets earn every shot.
“They have big strong guys,” Reid said. “We couldn’t let them dunk on us. When they get into the post, they’re dangerous. They’re a pretty good team.”
Reid scored a career-high 17 points, and Chris Singleton hit the go-ahead basket with 1:05 left in overtime to help Florida State beat No. 22 Georgia Tech 66-59 on Sunday night.
The Seminoles (10-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their fourth straight and stopped Georgia Tech’s seven-game winning streak.
Hamilton was delighted that Reid, a senior power forward known mostly for his defense, gave Florida State an offensive boost.
“He is the only senior we have on this team,” Hamilton said. “He’s been our unsung hero for two or three years. He always seems to take the toughest defensive assignments and does all the dirty work.”
Zachery Peacock scored 17 for the Yellow Jackets (8-2, 0-1 ACC). Mfon Udofia added 12 points, and Derrick Favors pulled down 12 rebounds as Georgia Tech lost its fourth straight ACC opener.
“We went into the game feeling like we had to score in transition before they could set up defensively, but we did not do that,” Jackets coach Paul Hewitt said. “We shot early and quick in the first half. In the second half, we did a better job moving the ball around and getting some open shots.”
No. 14 UConn 60, UCF 51
HARTFORD, Conn. ó Connecticut got bigger on Sunday with the addition of 6-foot-11 freshman Ater Majok. It wasn’t immediately clear if the Huskies have gotten better.
Stanley Robinson scored 26 points and No. 14 UConn had to come from behind to beat Central Florida 60-51.
Robinson scored 23 of his points in the second half, helping Connecticut (7-2) overcome a 9-point deficit.
BC 72, Bryant 46
BOSTON ó Joe Trapani scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Corey Raji added 20 points and eight boards to lead Boston College to a 72-46 victory over winless Bryant on Sunday.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Eagles (7-4) heading into Wednesday’s matchup with Massachusetts, which upset Memphis on Saturday.
Cornell 91, Davidson 88 (OT)NEW YORK ó Ryan Wittman capped a season-high 29-point performance by hitting the long 3-pointer at the overtime buzzer and Cornell beat Davidson 91-88 on Sunday in the Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden.
JP Kuhlman of Davidson made the first of two free throws with 6.6 seconds left to tie it at 88. Jeff Foote grabbed the miss of the second free throw ó his 14th rebound of the game ó and found Wittman, who let his winner go from halfway between the NBA 3-point line and the Knicks midcourt logo.
Cornell, which has won six straight, will play St. John’s, which beat Hofstra 72-60, in Monday night’s championship game.
Davidson, which has lost three of four, trailed by 17 in the first half and were down 44-31 at halftime. The Wildcats took their first lead of the game at 63-61 on a drive by Nik Cochran with 6:24 left. There would be 10 more lead changes.
Jake Cohen had 18 points for the Wildcats (3-8).
