CONWAY, S.C. ó Chad Gray scored a career-high 31 points in a milestone win for Coastal Carolina coach Cliff Ellis, as the Chanticleers eased past Savannah State 91-70 on Saturday.
It was the 568th win for Ellis, moving him into a tie for 12th place for Division I wins among active coaches. Ellis has 646 career wins.
Miami 87, Florida Atlantic 69
SUNRISE, Fla. ó James Dews scored 15 points and the Miami Hurricanes had a big rebounding advantage to beat Florida Atlantic 87-69 in the first game of the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic.
Dews scored all of his points in the first half, when Miami built a 43-23 lead. Dwayne Collins had 17 points and 14 rebounds in 24 minutes for the Hurricanes, who enjoyed a 55-31 edge on the boards.
Notre Dame 84, UCLA 73
SOUTH BEND, Ind. ó Luke Harangody scored 23 points, four other Notre Dame players scored in double figures and the Fighting Irish shot 60 percent in the second half en route to an 84-73 victory over UCLA.
GAME POSTPONED
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ó The University of Virginia has postponed its basketball game against UNC Wilmington because of the winter storm.
Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage says UNC Wilmington’s team is in Charlottesville, but the school is concerned that fans coming to Saturday’s game would be put in danger by the heavy snowfall and slick roads.
VCU 78, Tulane 77
NEW ORLEANS ó Larry Sanders scored 16 points as Virginia Commonwealth held off Tulane 78-77 despite losing nearly all of a 17-point second-half lead.
Richmond 56, No. 13 Florida 53
SUNRISE, Fla. ó Richmond rallied from a 13-point first-half deficit, and Kevin Anderson made four free throws in the final 5.4 seconds to upset No. 13 Florida 56-53 in the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic.
The Gators shot 7 for 27 in the second half (26 percent), including 1 for 9 from 3-point range. They led for the last time at 49-48.
