Staff report
Carson’s boys basketball team remained unbeaten with a 71-53 victory at Jay M. Robinson on Monday night.
Nick Houston had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead four double-figure scorers for the Cougars (6-0).
“I’m happy with our start,” Carson coach Brian Perry said. “We’re still working every game, trying to get better. We’re building up toward conference, and we want to be polishing our game up.”
Cody Clanton posted 18 points with seven rebounds, and Darius Moose had a double-double (11 points, 10 boards). Brandon Ferrare contributed 11 points, and Derrick Sewell had five rebounds to go along with seven points.
Ferrare and Devon Heggins performed well on the perimeter against the Bulldogs (3-2).
“I thought our point guards played really well,” Perry said. “They had a lot of good drives, and both played well defensively after the first quarter, when we missed a few assignments. We straightened it out for the rest of the game.”
Carson trailed 17-12 after one quarter but led 35-29 at halftime and 54-38 heading to the fourth period.
Clanton, who scored a career-high 24 points last Tuesday in a victory against Mount Pleasant, hit two 3-pointers and went 4-for-4 from the line. Sewell was coming off a 14-point effort against West Davidson on Friday.
Both were key members of a football team that reached the second round of the state playoffs.
“Cody and Derrick, after coming from football and being a little late, they’re starting to get a feel for the game,” Perry said. “After a couple of weeks, a couple of practices and a couple of games, they’re getting their basketball legs under them.”
The Cougars return to action Wednesday at Hickory Ridge and begin conference play Friday at Statesville.
