Area athletes update …
Guilford Tech’s DaQuondra Cuthbertson (North Rowan) broke a school record with 16 rebounds in a 74-67 win against Rock Hill’s Clinton Junior College last week.
Cuthbertson has helped her team start 8-1.
* Rashonda Mayfield (West Rowan), who plays at NAIA Voorhees (6-5) in Denmark, S.C., scored 10 points in a 54-29 victory against Johnson & Wales on Friday.
* Freshman Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury) had 10 points and five rebounds in a 62-43 loss against Auburn on Saturday.
George Washington is 2-5. That’s an adjustment for Shipp, whose teams lost a total of five her last two seasons as a Hornet.
* Brittany Cornelius (East Rowan) is averaging 15.7 points and 7.0 rebounds for Meredith.
* Mars Hill’s Brittini Young, who played her freshman high school season at East, is one of the top guards in the SAC. She scored 20 points in Saturday’s 71-66 loss to King.
* Redshirt freshman center Katie Wise (South Rowan) started for UNC Asheville at Charlotte on Saturday in a 59-37 loss. Wise played 11 minutes and contributed a blocked shot and a rebound.
* Katelynne Poole (East) scored four points for Brevard in a 90-73 win against Truett-McConnell last week.
Brevard (4-4) has already played four overtime games, including Saturday’s 84-81 SAC loss to Tusculum.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Fayetteville State’s Jamel Carpenter (West) hasn’t slowed down yet and is leading the CIAA in scoring at 25.0 points a game, while shooting 50 percent from the floor and 86 percent from the line. He’s also averaging 9.0 rebounds per contest.
In his most recent outing, Carpenter shot 9-for-15 and scored 26 points in an 89-79 loss to St. Andrews.
“He’s doing all I ask,” coach Alphonza Kee said on the school Web site. “He’s playing as hard as he can and playing multiple positions.”
* Shamari Spears (Salisbury) has averaged 19.7 points per game for Charlotte (6-1). Freshman K.J. Sherrill (West) has played in all seven games and has contributed 16 points and 16 rebounds.
* Coker’s Michael Gore (South) contributed four points and two rebounds in a 69-63 loss to East Carolina on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
East Carolina’s Scotty Robinson (Salisbury) was in on two tackles for loss, had two quarterback hurries and was credited with a 21-yard sack in a 38-32 victory against Houston in Saturday’s Conference-USA championship game.
* Appalachian State defensive tackle Anthony Williams (NW Cabarrus) made three tackles in a 35-32 playoff win against defending champ Richmond on Saturday. Defensive lineman Gordy Witte (Salisbury) saw action for the Mountaineers.
INDOOR TRACK
A number of teams opened the season at the Appalachian Invitational in Boone on Saturday.
Western Carolina’s Ryan Pless (East) finished sixth in the shot (47 feet, 5 inches) and ninth in the weight throw (50-21/2).
* Western pole vaulters Wayne Parker (East) and Keith Leonard (East) placed 15th and 18th, respectively.
Parker cleared 13-11/4, while Leonard’s best mark was 13-51/4.
* Appalachian State’s Phillip Bush (North) was 14th in the 55 meters (7.92), 15th in the 200 (23.18) and 16th in the long jump (21-23/4).n Charlotte’s Makenzie Mullinax (South) tied for 11th in the women’s pole vault, clearing 9-61/4.
* WCU’s Garrett West (NW Cabarrus) was fifth in the 800 in 1:59.63.
OVERSEAS HOOPS
Former Boston College standout Tyrese Rice, who grew up in Salisbury, is now playing pro ball in Greece.
BASEBALL
Billy Veal (North) had a strong fall at Wilkes Community College as a pitcher and shortstop.
Veal transferred from Lander.
SOFTBALL
Catcher Gina Loflin (West) signed with Union, an NAIA school in Barbourville, Ky.
Loflin played at Walters State Community College in Tennessee the last two seasons and was second-team all-conference as a sophomore.
