RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation encourages middle and high schools across the state to register for the eighth annual NCDOT Model Bridge Building Competition. The deadline for registration is Wednesday, Dec. 13.

The event challenges student teams to design and build a model bridge. Teams will first compete in regional competitions on March 9, 2007, with the winners traveling to Raleigh for the state competition on April 13, 2007. Winners will receive $650 for first place, $400 for second, $250 for third and $100 for fourth place.

The NCDOT Model Bridge Building Competition gives students an opportunity to learn problem-solving strategies and use critical thinking skills, while making the connection between what is taught in the classroom and real world applications. Working in teams, students will look at the methods of brainstorming ideas, designing a diagram and constructing the model. A panel will judge the entries.

This competition is also about the promotion and application of education, communication, career exploration and public service. NCDOT believes students will best experience tomorrow’s career opportunities by working with industry professionals today.

The NCDOT Model Bridge Building Competition is sponsored in part by Carolinas Associated General Contractors and the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina.

Teachers may register online at http://www.ncdot.org /about/kids/BridgeComp/. Students must be sponsored by a teacher. For more information, contact Hollie Allen via email at hgallen@dot.state. nc.us or by calling 919-733-2210.
