If you’re driving up North Main Street towards the square this weekend, take a look at the Plaza building.
Miller Davis Studios, a Salisbury-based advertising, marketing and public relations agency, is projecting an animated holiday light show onto the side of the Plaza building that faces the Rowan County Justice Center.
The show features holiday animations that move to music played over speakers from the Miller Davis offices.
A decorated Christmas tree twirls on the side of the building as “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” plays and Jingle Bells fall from the air over a guitar to the sounds of “Jingle Bell Rock.”
Mike Miller, Miller Davis Studios president, said the show includes music that everyone, young and old, can enjoy. The show lasts about 12 minutes and listeners can hear about 11 different songs.
Instrumental music by Mannheim Steamroller, as well as “I’m Gettin’ Nuttin’ for Christmas,” are also featured.
Those standing on the street sidewalks should be able to hear the music well, but drivers should tune their radios to 95.9 FM to hear the holiday music.
Miller said as long as drivers are in the vicinity of the Plaza they should be able to hear the music.
Miller saw a similar light show projected onto a building in Washington, D.C., when he visited there a few months ago and came back with the idea.
“It’s kind of our gift, our present to Salisbury,” he said.
Originally, the show was set to be projected on the front of Miller Davis’s building, the Washington building, but the street lights were too bright.
All together the show cost between $4,000 and $5,000, Miller said. All elements of the show are on automatic timers — Walser Technologies helped with that aspect, according to Miller.
Norma and Reid Bradshaw, Salisbury residents, were eating at Wink’s restaurant on Friday night and heard about the show.
They drove to Main Street to check it out.
“It’s pretty neat,” Norma said.
Reid said others eating in the restaurant were talking about the show and “we thought what the heck we’ll ride up here and see it.”
Many drivers slowed down as they approached the show and a few even stopped in the street to watch until another vehicle approached.
The show runs from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. today and Monday. Miller said they may start the projection again next weekend if they get enough calls.
