RALEIGH ó The N.C. Arts Council singled out Waterworks Visual Arts Center and the Salisbury-Rowan Symphony for special support in handing out grants for Davidson, Davie and Rowan counties for 2008-2009.
Altogether, the state arts group awarded $161,953 in grants for arts programs and projects in the three counties and $7,427,425 to 269 grantees throughout North Carolina.
In Rowan and its two neighbors, grants went to:
– Waterworks Visual Arts Center, $25,000 for general operating support.
– Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Society, $20,000 for general operating support.
– Rowan Arts Council got two grants:
ó $2,500 for an artist-in-residence program by potter Senora Lynch to create a clay tile mural.
ó $45,052 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants in Rowan County.
– Arts United for Davidson County, $51,312 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants in Davidson County.
– Davie County Arts Council, $18,089 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants in Yadkin and Davie counties.
“In elementary schools, senior centers, museums, concert halls and community centers, more than 9 million people participated in projects funded by the Arts Council last year,” Mary B. Regan, executive director of the N.C. Arts Council, said in a press release. “We are delighted to share such diverse programs with citizens across the state in their own communities.”
The Arts Council, a division of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, www.ncculture.com, serves as an economic catalyst, investing in local communities and offering technical assistance to artists and organizations. The majority of Arts Council funding comes from the N.C. General Assembly, while some comes from the National Endowment for the Arts.
