EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree, University of Kentucky, 1969; master’s degree, University of Florida, 1974; doctorate, University of Florida, 1976.
CAREER: Perdue worked as a hospital administrator before she was elected to the state House in 1986 and served two terms. She then served five terms in the Senate, becoming one of the chamber’s chief budget-writers. She was elected as the state’s first female lieutenant governor in 2000 and re-elected in 2004. She serves as chairwoman of N.C. Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission, and led North Carolina’s lobbying effort to protect military bases during the most recent round of closings. Beat two other candidates to win Democratic nomination for governor in May.
