CAREER: McCrory, until recently a longtime Duke Energy Corp. employee, served on the Charlotte City Council from 1989 to 1995. He was elected as Charlotte’s mayor in 1995, succeeding Richard Vinroot and becoming the city’s youngest mayor at 39. Won a record seventh two-year term in 2007. Founding member of N.C. Metropolitan Coalition, a lobbying group for the state’s largest cities. Beat four other candidates to win Republican governor’s nomination in May.
