The N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer recently offered a travel package sure to delight the senses.
The Virginia Autumn Excursion departed the train station at Spencer at 7 a.m. Saturday bound for Charlottesville, Va. It stopped in Greensboro about an hour later to pick up more passengers.
The train was 21 cars long and carried approximately 800 people to Charlottesville on Saturday and again Sunday. Both train excursions were sold out.
First-class passengers, as well as those riding in Amtrak and NCDOT Rail coach cars, were served a continental breakfast on the way to Charlottesville and dinner on the return ride.
During the trip, passengers experienced breathtaking fall colors along the scenic route.
The dome car, pictured on the right, allowed a near panoramic view.
Passengers disembarked at Charlottesville to spend 21/2 hours in the city before returning to the train for the trip back, which ended at 7 p.m. in Greensboro and 8 p.m. in Spencer.
