Tornado Warning for Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and Union
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ó A tornado warning has expired for Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and Union counties near Charlotte as thunderstorms bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of North Carolina.
The National Weather Service said Monday its radar indicates a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado is near Rock Hill, S.C., just south of the North Carolina line. The storm is moving northeast.
Several other thunderstorms are expected to develop today ahead of a strong cold front moving in from the west. Forecasters said the storms will increase in coverage and intensity as they move from the Winston-Salem area to the coast this afternoon.
Thunderstorms dumped up to a half-foot of rain in areas north of Charlotte over the weekend, and a flood warning was issued Monday for the Neuse River in Smithfield.
