Staff report
GRANITE QUARRY ó Thanks to alert clerks, a man who police say robbed the Subway shop Thursday night was caught minutes later.
Eric Goodrich Burton, 39, 716 Lake Drive, Granite Quarry, is charged with common law robbery and is in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $15,000 bond.A clerk at the Subway, at 314 N. Salisbury Ave., called 911 shortly after the robbery.
Sgt. R.T. Taylor, of the Granite Quarry-Faith Police Department, said the staff reported a white man entered the store and told them to “give me the money and no one will get hurt.”
He grabbed cash from the register and left on foot, but a witness saw him get into a red-and-white Ford Bronco.
One or more witnesses also provided a license plate number and direction of travel.
Within minutes, officers stopped the suspect’s vehicle at the intersection of Dunn’s Mountain Church Road and Stokes Ferry Road.
Sgt. Taylor said the Subway clerks identified the man as the robber.
Police also recovered $205 in cash, which was taken from the business.
No weapon was found and there was no mention of a weapon during the robbery.
Taylor credited the staff at Subway with “doing an outstanding job to get us the information we needed. They are to be commended,” he said. “Without their help, it would have been tough.”
Granite Quarry-Faith police got assistance from the Rowan Cunty Sheriff’s Office and from the East Spencer Police.
Burton is set to appear in Rowan County District Court on Monday.
