Fred and Alice Stanback of Salisbury recently contributed $180,000 toward the Conservation Trust for North Carolina’s purchase of a 101-acre tract in McDowell County.
The Jackson Knob Cove property is on the Blue Ridge escarpment. Located near milepost 328 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the land is visible from Altapass Orchard and several overlooks along the parkway north of Little Switzerland.
The land trust bought the property for $350,000 from Augusta Developers, represented by Johnny Craver of Mooresville and Fred Suther of Concord.
The land trust combined its own funds with the contribution from the Stanbacks to close the purchase Nov. 10.
The Jackson Knob Cove land is one of several properties the land trust is trying to protect along a 5-mile stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Altapass and north of Little Switzerland.
On Monday in Durham, the Stanbacks received the North Carolina Award, the state’s highest civilian honor. It recognized their many contributions to land conservation and the environment
