Boy Scouts from the Carolinas and Virginia converged on the N.C. Transportation Museum over the weekend for their annual Rail Camp. Some 391 troops signed up for the event, which includes activities to help them earn their Railroading Merit Badge.
The scouts arrived in Spencer on Friday night and set up camp, covering the Transportation Museum grounds with tents and tables.
Most of their activities were held on Saturday. They spent another night camping on the site and left early Sunday.
To earn the badge, Scouts have to familiarize themselves with different kinds of trains and how they work, understand how Amtrak came about and how it works, and learn about Operation Lifesaver, the public information program dedicated to reducing collisions, injuries and fatalities at highway-rail crossings and on railroad tracks.
They learned about trains, planes and automobiles at the museum and even found time to play cards.
