Staff report
On Nov. 9, a prayer garden was dedicated in memory of Charles D. “Chuck” Barringer at Shiloh United Methodist Church in Granite Quarry.
For 48 years, Barringer was Scoutmaster of the church’s Troop 379, sponsored by Granite Quarry Civitan Club.
On Nov. 8, 2006, he died as the result a fall while doing what he loved so much, working at his church.
For his Eagle project, Colin Brown of Troop 379 and a member of Shiloh, wanted to do something special in memory of Barringer to celebrate his life and dedication to his church and to the Boy Scouts. Over the years, he mentored dozens of Eagle Scouts.
Brown was the last Scout who learned under Barringer’s direction and he wanted to do something for his Scoutmaster. Knowing how much Barringer loved the outdoors, Brown decided to create a prayer garden in Barringer’s memory. Brown is the son of Pat and David Brown of Salisbury. As part of the dedication service a granite plaque was presented to Barringer’s wife, Martha Ann, and her family. The plaque will be placed at the entry to the prayer garden, so all who enter will be greeted by Barringer’s smile.
It took five long months of planning, fundraising, design and construction for Brown’s goal to become a reality.
Major contributors include Godley’s Garden Center, Granite Quarry Civitans, F&M Bank, Farrington Family Medical Center, First Bank, Powlas Funeral Home and the Salisbury Chapter of the Harley Owner’s Group.
Bill Godley of Godley’s Garden Center helped design what turned out to be a beautiful addition at Shiloh United Methodist Church.
