State education officials announced last year that students would soon have to complete a graduation project to earn their high school diploma.
But parents and many educators were fuzzy on exactly what the project would involve.
Dr. Rebecca Smith, assistant superintendent with the Rowan-Salisbury School System, will clear up the confusion at Monday’s school board meeting.
She’ll give a presentation on the 36-page document that outlines what’s required of students, why they’re completing the project and how it’s structured.
This year’s sophomores are the first group the project requirement will affect.
The main project components are a research paper, a product, a portfolio, an oral presentation and submission of appropriate letters and forms associated with the project in a timely manner to a designated staff member.
Also on the agenda for Monday night’s school board meeting:
– Smith will give an overview of the 2008-2009 high school registration guidebooks for high school and eighth-grade students.
– School board members will review the contract with board attorney Don Sayers and talk about possible revisions and attorney duties.
– Board members will review amendments to the student transfer policy.
– The board will consider approving a survey that would be mailed to parents to obtain feedback for the school system.
– Board members will discuss implementing a districtwide customer service program. The program is expected to cost about $24,000
– Tina Mashburn, director of middle grades education, will present an update from the Middle School Task Force.
The Board of Education meeting starts at 5 p.m. in the school administration offices at 110 S. Long St., East Spencer.
