Four turkeys and several pounds of Thanksgiving fixins’ fed nearly 100 people Thursday at Rowan Helping Ministries.
The food was prepared, as it has been for years, by members of Open Door Outreach Deliverance Christian Ministries in East Spencer.
Pastor Karen Foxx says she especially enjoys her time preparing and serving meals at the shelter.
More than 13 years ago Foxx was a homeless crack addict. She was in the same position as many of those she now helps.
“I know what it’s like to be homeless. I understand their situation, but if they learn to depend on Jesus …” she said.
Foxx said she and her husband, elder Billy Foxx Sr., were both drug addicts.
“We both used to eat at that shelter when we were on crack.
“It’s a blessing to go back and give something back. We enjoy doing it,” she said.
Foxx, who lives in Salisbury, said several people helped her and her husband Thursday, including Assistant Pastor Carla Platt, Youth Pastor Jackie Yancey, her son, Billy Foxx Jr., and her daughter, Prophetess Tranetta Foxx. Other church members and volunteers were Anderson Wise, Walt Brotherton and Valerie Neely.
Foxx delivered a sermon at the meal to encourage the people attending. A lot of drug addicts come to the shelter.
“They are looking for a change รณ something that they can stand on. But the only sure thing is Jesus.
“I enjoy being able to encourage somebody. Life is short,” she said.
Foxx said in addition to turkey, the menu consisted of dressing, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, rolls and several types of cake. The church prepared enough food for 125 to 150 people.
Foxx said there was so much leftover food the shelter staff said they had enough to serve lunch on Friday.
