Authorities say speed was a factor in the death of a Salisbury motorcyclist who struck a utility pole early Tuesday morning on Mahaley Avenue.
Daniel Patrick Holmes, 52, was traveling an estimated 75 mph in a 35 mph zone, Salisbury Police Chief Mark Wilhelm said.
The speed limit is reduced to 25 mph during certain times of the day as a school zone, but the accident did not occur during any of those times.
Holmes died about 9:45 a.m. The collision occurred in front of Westview Court Apartment Homes.
The apartment complex sits at the southwest corner of Mahaley Avenue and Park Road West. Knox Middle and Overton Elementary schools are located on Park Road West.
“There was no evidence of alcohol,” Wilhelm said.
Holmes was riding a 2004 Kawasaki ZX 1200. He was wearing a helmet.
