KANNAPOLIS ó Northwest Cabarrus High School beat A.L. Brown in the first annual can drive competition held in conjunction with the city of Kannapolis.
Students at Northwest Cabarrus collected 535 pounds of aluminum cans, compared to the 221 pounds collected by students from A.L. Brown.
As a part of Earth Day, students at each high school were encouraged to bring in aluminum cans for recycling. The Kannapolis Fire Department collected the cans, raising $582 for the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center and Camp Celebrate.
“The money will go to help pay for T-shirts for Camp Celebrate,” said Renee Goodnight, Kannapolis’ community outreach coordinator. “This camp provides an annual weekend camping experience for children who are patients or former patients of the burn center.”
City officials started the competition to help foster environmental stewardship in Kannapolis. Other upcoming initiatives include the formation of the Environmental Stewardship Committee, which will tackle issues such as greening city operations, developing an Earth Day event, examining alternate forms of transportation and other issues related to improving environmental practices within the city.
