A Rowan County woman is in critical condition after being pinned in a car after it overturned Friday morning.
Sherry Leonard, 40, of 510 N. Salisbury Ave., Spencer, was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Jimmy Lee Leonard, 43.
The accident happened on Old Concord Road, between Cruse Road and Mount Hope Church Road. The Leonards are route carriers for the Charlotte Observer.
According to Trooper D.T. Sloop of the N.C. Highway Patrol, the Leonards’ 1993 Ford Escort was traveling north toward Salisbury at 7:44 a.m. when it ran off the right side of the road, struck a pair of driveway abutments and overturned at least once.
Sloop said Sherry Leonard was trapped in the car. Emergency workers jacked up the vehicle to pull her out.
Sloop said Leonard’s husband suffered minor injuries but was out of the car when he arrived. The couple’s son, Tony Leonard, 20, was a passenger, but was not hurt.
Jimmy Leonard was transported to Rowan Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released. Sherry Leonard was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she was undergoing surgery early Friday evening.
“She had some pretty bad injuries,” Sloop said.
Jimmy Leonard was charged with exceeding a safe speed. Sloop said Leonard told him that he tried to pull the car back on the road, but couldn’t do so before it struck the driveway abutments and overturned.
