Navy band performs Sunday in Kannapolis

The city of Kannapolis Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a free concert by the U.S. Navy Band’s Commodores Jazz Ensemble on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the A.L. Brown Performing Arts Center, 415 E. First St., Kannapolis.
The program will feature music that not only pays tribute to the legendary big bands of yesterday, but original compositions by members of the group.
Officially founded in 1969, the U.S. Navy Band’s Commodores Jazz Ensemble is a specialty unit and features 18 of the Navy’s top jazz and big band musicians. Many jazz legends have appeared with the group, including Ray Charles, Louie Bellson, Terry Gibbs, Bruce Johnstone, Bob Mintzer, James Moody, Clark Terry and Eugene “Snooky” Young. The group is under the direction of Captain George F. Thompson, commanding officer/leader.
