ATLANTA ó Miller Ferry Fire Department in Rowan County will benefit from grants released by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today.
FEMA awarded $503,130 in Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) funding to local fire departments and emergency medical services organizations in the state of North Carolina.
Miller Ferry will receive $44,247 total, with $2,350 dedicated to equipment and $44,225 for personal protective equipment.
“This funding is an investment by FEMA in these departments to help them purchase life-saving equipment and needed training to be better prepared when called to duty,” said Phil May, FEMA Region IV administrator.
Nationally, this week’s grants total $17 million. The AFG program includes three kinds of awards: Fire Grants, Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants and Fire Prevention and Safety grants (FP&S).
Five departments, in addition to Miller Ferry, received Fire Grants, which fund firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical services organizations, and support regional projects involving multiple organizations serving more than one local jurisdiction.
The others are Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department, Middlesex, $23,527; C.C. Camp Volunteer Fire Department, Elkin, $62,043; Guil-Rand Fire Department, Archdale; $111,113; Reynolds Volunteer Fire Department Inc., Asheville, $132,525; and Saluda Volunteer Fire & Rescue Inc., Saluda, $129,675.
The fiscal year 2008 AFG awards, which are being distributed in phases, will ultimately provide about $500 million to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations throughout the country.
