Meowing cat alerts Concord family to fire

CONCORD ó A meowing cat awoke a family of five whose house was on fire early Tuesday, a press release from the Concord Fire and Life Safety Department said.
The family escaped along with a kitten. The older cat who awoke them ran off into the woods and hadn’t returned later Tuesday morning.
Concord firefighters arrived at the home at 416 Peigler St. at 3:46 a.m. ó six minutes after the Concord communications center received a 911 call ó to find heavy fire and smoke coming from the roof. Firefighters had the blaze contained by 4:08 a.m.The house was a total loss, along with two vehicles parked in the garage. Firefighters recovered a few personal items, including family pictures and the wife’s wedding ring. The Red Cross assisted the family with shelter.
A total of eight units responded to the fire with 28 firefighters.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Tuesday morning.
