A China Grove man was charged Monday with a felony count of cruelty to animals, accused of killing a small dog with a .12-gauge shotgun.
Terry Lynn Shawnfield, 46, of 2172 Old Beatty Ford Road, was being held in the Rowan County Detention Center as of late Monday. He’s being held under a $2,500 bond for the cruelty to animals charge.
In addition, Shawnfield is charged with two counts of assault by pointing a gun and one count of communicating threats. He’s being held under an additional $1,000 bond on those charges.
According to arrest warrants filed in the Rowan County Magistrate’s Office, Shawnfield killed a 2-year-old chihuahua and Lhasa apso mix, named Chewee, with a shotgun blast.
Shawnfield is scheduled to make a first court appearance this morning.
The charges against Shawnfield were filed by the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.
Shawnfield is ordered not to have any contact with Mark Propst or Melanee Kay McKabe, the two people he’s accused of pointing a gun at.
