An East Spencer man who apparently fled a one-vehicle accident Friday night in Salisbury was seriously injured about 5 minutes later when a pickup hit him as he crossed Jake Alexander Boulevard on foot.
Hugo Morales Garcia, 26, of East Spencer, was airlifted from Rowan Regional Medical Center to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he remained in intensive care Saturday.
Salisbury Police Sgt. Kevin Wilborn said a vehicle belonging to Garcia was involved in a wreck at Jake Alexander Boulevard and South Main Street. There were no witnesses to that accident, Wilborn said.
Later, as Garcia tried to cross Jake Alexander Boulevard on foot near Julian Road, he was struck by a 2008 Ford 350 pickup driven by Harold Creason of Norfolk, Va.
Wilborn said the area where Garcia tried to cross the road in front of Central Carolina Insurance lacks street lighting, and Creason told police he never saw Garcia.
Creason’s truck was traveling east toward Interstate 85.
The front center of the pickup hit Garcia, according to reports.
The accident happened about 11:24 p.m.
No charges were filed against Creason.
