MACON, Ga. (AP) ó George McCanless was named president and publisher of The Telegraph on Wednesday, said the McClatchy Co. which bought the Macon newspaper in 2006.
McCanless, 51, had been the senior vice president of finance and strategic planning for The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., since March 2004 after four years with the newspaper.
The new publisher was introduced to The Telegraph staff on Wednesday. He will being working at the Macon paper by mid-February.
He said it fulfills a longtime goal to become a publisher.
“I am very eager to get started here,” said McCanless, a Salisbury, N.C., native.
He replaces Pamela “P.J.” Browning who came to The Telegraph in January 2005, and was named president and publisher of The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, S.C., in December.
During his 25 years in newspapers, McCanless has served as director of administration at The Times Herald-Record in Middletown, N.Y.; chief financial officer of The New Haven Register in New Haven, Conn.; and finance director of The Herald, a McClatchy newspaper in Rock Hill, S.C. He is a graduate of Wake Forest University.
McClatchy publishes 31 daily newspapers and is the nation’s second-largest newspaper publisher.
