Mac Butner has helped to man the Rowan County Republican booth at the county fair for some 40 years, and he never saw anything like it.
Last week during the fair, local supporters of the GOP’s national ticket ó John McCain and Sarah Palin ó were paying $5 each for McCain-Palin yard signs.
“They were going out like hotcakes,” Butner said.
Butner, a local Republican activist and former candidate for several offices, was surprised on two fronts.
First, Butner said the activity around the Republican booth was heavier this year than with President Bush’s re-election campaign four years ago.
Second, he was surprised that local Republicans were willing to pay $5 for the signs, which for almost any other race are given away free.
