Some local Republican leaders found President Barack Obama’s message positive and uplifting, while others aren’t swayed by the message.
“He’s my president. I hope he is successful in turning the economy around,” said N.C. Rep. Fred Steen of Landis
Steen said the nation needs to get behind Obama, but at the same time hold the government accountable.
While not a fan of bailouts, Steen said the jobs proposals offer hope. “Most people want to work, they don’t want a handout,” he said.
Chad Mitchell, currently the longest-serving member of the Rowan County Board of Commissioners, said Obama made some very bold promises.
“It will be interesting to see if he has the political power,” Mitchell said, adding that Obama’s move to the center has already caused him problems with the left wing of the Democratic party.
Steven Kidd, chairman of the Rowan County Republican Executive Committee, found the inauguration very positive and uplifting. He noted thousands of people from all walks of life filled the National Mall. “You could see average people of all walks of life have sincere interest in the government and leadership of our country.
“His message was inspiring and hopefully he is willing to work with both parties to accomplish what is in the best interest of the county,” Kidd said, adding, “It was a good speech.”
Jim Sides, a former commissioner and one of the more conservative officeholders, said he didn’t watch the inauguration or listen to Obama’s speech
“He can’t deliver what he promised to get elected,” Sides said, adding that Obama can’t deliver on any more promises.
“There’s no money,” Sides said, adding that our grandchildren will have to pay back the debt the government is running up.
