Folks looking for jobs may be able to get one counting their neighbors and collecting information about their community.
The government will begin hiring early this year for people to help conduct the 2010 Census in Rowan County.
Census jobs will last five to 10 weeks and could provide up to 40 hours a week of employment, the government says. They offer mileage reimbursement.
Positions available will be census takers, crew leaders, crew leader assistants and recruiting assistants. Day, evening and some weekend work will be required, as will four days of paid training for those offered jobs.
Applicants must take a test that includes sections on: clerical skills such as identifying numerical patterns, placing dates in order and grouping records; reading skills such as choosing the best definition for a word and answering questions based on a written selection; interpreting information and evaluating alternatives such as reading a map and identifying the best routes to perform Census tasks in that area; and organizational skills.
Applications can be filled out at the same time tests are taken or printed online and taken to the test. Testing for the positions will be held:
– Jan. 5, 7 and 9 at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the Frank Tadlock South Rowan Regional Library, 920 Kimball Road, China Grove.
– Jan. 12, 14 and 16 at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the Granite Quarry Municipal Building, 143 N. Salisbury Ave., Granite Quarry.
– Jan. 21, 22 and 23 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Rowan Public Library, 201 W. Fisher St., Salisbury.
– Jan. 26, 28 and 30 at Cleveland Town Hall, 302 E. Main St., Cleveland.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have an I.D. in the form of a passport, drivers license or DMV I.D. card, as well as a Social Security card or birth certificate.
