The city of Salisbury along with a class of community planning students from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte are inviting residents of Jersey City to a neighborhood summit Saturday to discuss a revitalization project.
Officials plan to hold the summit from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Salisbury City Park Community Center, 316 Lake Drive. Lunch and child care will be provided to those who attend.
Transportation will also be provided for those who may need it. For information on transportation arrangements contact Janet Gapen at 704-638-5230.
Jersey City, located off Mocksville Avenue, is more than a century old. According to a history compiled by neighborhood residents, Jersey City was established around 1870 by freed slaves. They came from plantations across the Yadkin River, found land outside of Salisbury and built homes.
The summit, to be held Saturday, will center on preliminary plans for the development of 5 acres at the end of Best Street, as well as the revitalization of the Jersey City neighborhood.
“The Jersey City neighborhood is a hidden gem in our community,” Planning Director Joe Morris said. “Residents enjoy proximity to downtown, medical facilities, the Salisbury Greenway and City Park. The UNC Charlotte Community Planning workshop, by involving neighborhood residents, will help create a development concept that builds on Jersey City’s inherent amenities and locational advantages.”
Partnering with the city is a community planning workshop class of undergraduate and graduate students from UNCC. The class has been making site visits and talking with residents to come up with objectives to create a site plan for the property as well as a potential overall master plan for the neighborhood.
