Staff report
Hundreds of youngsters and their parents showed up for the 10th Halloween Funfest in downtown Salisbury.
Some came as witches, big chickens and geisha girls, but all left with bags of candy after an hour of treating from downtown merchants.
Some faced a huge task ó hanging onto a bag of candy while devouring huge turkey legs.
The parking lot at the corner of Church and Fisher streets served as Halloween Central, with lots of games and food vendors.
Youngsters had lots of entertainment options including a haunted bus ride and a hay ride.
Parks and Recreation staff kept scooping out buckets of candy to pass out as the parking lot filled up. Many got to try out their costumes early, with the main event still a few days away. Halloween is coming Friday.
Organizers had worried that rain would hang around and put a damper on the festivities.
Instead, the sun chased the clouds away, bringing out witches, goblins and the like.
Talita McCain, recreation coordinator for the city’s Miller Recreation Center, described the weather and the turnout as spooktacular.
“It’s a great event,” McCain said, adding her appreciation for the volunteers who assisted.
Students from Catawba and Livingstone College helped out, along with students from Salisbury High.
