The Salisbury Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Social Action Committee provided a “Foster Care Day of Grooming” in mid-March for African-American children in the custody of the Rowan County of Department of Social Services.
Twenty-five children participated in the free day of grooming provided by hair-care establishments that donated their time. Many establishments that were scheduled to be closed opened just for the days of the Foster Care Day of Grooming event to provide hair cuts and hairdos for the children.
The Day Of Grooming took place on three consecutive days, March 17-March 19. The Social Action Committee scheduled the Day of Grooming during those dates so the children could have well defined and perfect hair styles for the Easter holiday.
Rowan County and Iredell County hair care establishments that participated were: Above and Beyond Salon, Addison Barbering Styles, B & B Barber Shop, Big “V” Barber Shop, Define Design Boutique Beauty Salon, Designing “U” Salon, Destiny’s Beauty Salon, Elite Cuts Barber and Beauty Salon, Hair Designs by Shirley, Monica’s Beauty Salon, Tillman’s Barber Shop, and U-Can-Get-It Beauty Salon, and Cynthia Robertson.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a public service organization with headquarters in Washington, D.C. The president of the Salisbury Alumnae Chapter is Yvette Shelton.
