Food Lion demands 'dolphin-safe' tuna

Food Lion grocery stores agreed Thursday to stop purchasing from Dolores Tuna because the company catches its tuna by intentionally chasing and capturing dolphins, according to a press release from the International Marine Mammal Project.

The Earth Island Institute is a nonprofit educational agency that runs the project, which works to protect whales, dolphins and other marine mammals around the world.

Food Lion’s letter to Earth Island states that “Food Lion has decided to cease purchasing canned tuna products unless and until such time the manufacturer receives the ‘dolphin-safe’ certification.
