EAST SPENCER ó Firefighters battled a two-alarm house fire on Mitchell Street at Long Street early this morning.
Fire departments initially responded to the fire around 12:20 a.m. and found the house “fully involved” with heavy smoke and flames visible, according to emergency radio traffic.
A second alarm and call for more personnel went out at 12:30 a.m.
Firefighters had the blaze largely put out by around 12:40 a.m., though they continued to look for flames in the attic and elsewhere in the house. Using a thermal imaging system, they looked for areas of excessive heat inside the walls.
By 1 a.m., firefighters were performing overhaul operations but still putting out hot spots, including flames visible from an eave at the edge of the roof. They decided to cut the roof to release some of the heat.
It was unclear early this morning whether the house was occupied and, if so, how many people lived there. Early in the incident, firefighters determined there was no one in the house as they fought the blaze.
