At 4:03 a.m. Tuesday, Kannapolis firefighters were dispatched to a fire at a home at 1533 Summit Ridge Lane.
Kannapolis police officers in the area arrived first and began spraying the blaze with fire extinguishers until firefighters arrived. Smoke detectors and neighbors alerted the family, according to Fire Department spokeswoman Maria Bostian.
The fire remains under investigation, and the local chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family, which was not named.
