Faith Briefs – Festival of Hymns concert to be presented Sunday at Trinity Presbyterian

The Second Annual Festival of Hymns concert will be presented Sunday at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Salisbury.
The 4 p.m. concert will feature a chorus of musicians drawn from various churches reflecting the diversity of Salisbury and Rowan County.
Inspired by the goal of uniting all peoples of faith through singing, the hour-long concert will be comprised of six sections, each reflecting an aspect of the Christian life. Each section will be introduced by a brief reflection given by the Rev. Dr. Grant Harrison of Soldiers’ Memorial AME Zion Church.
The concert will be directed and accompanied by Dr. Phillip E. Burgess, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church; the Rev. Dr. Grant Harrison, Soldiers’ Memorial AME Zion; Joanne Harrison, Livingstone College; and Kay Wright Norman, VA Medical Center.
The concert is free and open to the public.
Triumphant Quartet
LEXINGTON ó The internationally known Southern gospel group, the Triumphant Quartet, will be in concert Sunday at 6 p. m., at Heath Church in Lexington.
Heath Church is located on New U.S. 64, 6 miles east of Lexington.
There is no admission charge to the concert. A building fund offering will be received.

Christ UMC
Christ United Methodist Church, 3401 Mooresville Road, is sponsoring its annual Community Fun Day today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be activities for adults and children. Highlights include giant inflatables, a climbing wall, hot air tethered balloon rides, a K-9 demonstration and a petting zoo by Lazy 5 Ranch. There will also be a clown show, face painting, lots of games and food and live music from the worship team.
All activities are open to the public and free of charge with the exception of a nominal cost for food.

Third Creek AME Zion
CLEVELAND ó Homecoming will be celebrated Sunday at Third Creek AME Zion Church, 415 E. Main St., Cleveland. The pastor, the Rev. Donnie C. Kent. will deliver the morning message.
The 3 p.m. service will be rendered by the Rev. Tajuan Kyles, assistant pastor of Cedar Grove AME Zion Church. She will be accompanied by her choir and congregation.
The Rev. Dr. Patricia Tyson is pastor of Cedar Grove.
Dinner will be served at 1:30 p.m.
Revival services will be conducted nightly, Monday through Wednesday, with the Rev. Dr. Calvin Miller, presiding elder of the Winston-Salem District, as the evangelist.

CHINA GROVE ó A fundraiser for children’s ministries will be held today at the South China Grove Church of God, 163 Third Ave.
A yard sale will begin at 8 a.m. Hot dogs with all the trimmings will be sold beginning at 10 a.m. A free outdoor gospel concert will feature various singers and begin at 11 a.m. All activities will end at 5 p.m.

Trinity UMC
KANNAPOLIS ó Trinity United Methodist Church, 416 E. First St., Kannapolis, will hold the Crafty Ladies 25th Bazaar today from 8 a.m. until noon.
The bazaar will feature seasonal and nonseasonal crafts, homemade baked and canned goods, sausage and ham biscuits, fried apple pies, orange juice, and coffee will be available before and during the bazaar.
All proceeds will go to church projects.
Calvary Baptist
Revival services begin this week at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Don Whitt as the guest speaker.
Whitt is a full-time evangelist who lives in Milan, Tenn. He has served in pastorates for the past 30 years, including five of those years as director of evangelism for the Ohio Baptist State Convention.
Whitt is a graduate of Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and Luther Rice Seminary in Lithonia, Ga. Dr. and Mrs. Whitt are the parents of three children ó one attorney and two pastors.
Revival services begin Sunday, with the 11 a.m. morning worship service at Calvary and continue nightly at 7 p.m. through Wednesday, Oct. 15. Children’s Night of the meeting is set for Sunday evening with a pizza party at 6 p.m. Youth Night will be held on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Host pastor is Dr. Rick Cockerham. The public is invited to attend all services. A nursery will be provided.

Mount Zion Lutheran
RICHFIELD óMount Zion Lutheran Church, Richfield, will celebrate 113 years of service to God with homecoming this Sunday. The day will begin with Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. followed by the morning worship service at 10:30 a.m.
Minister for this homecoming worship service will be Interim Pastor Graham Nahouse.
The Rev. Nahouse and his wife, Nancy, are residents of China Grove. They have three children, Elizabeth, Mary and Robbie, and one granddaughter, Brianna Sossoman.
Nahouse is a graduate of the University of Richmond. He obtained a master of divinity degree from Southeastern Seminary, Wake Forest, in 1962, and a certificate in theology from Southern Theological Seminary, Columbia, S.C., in 1964. He was ordained by the North Carolina Synod in 1964.
During his ministry, Nahouse, has served on many committees in the N.C. Synod. He served as secretary of the Coastal Conference, 1988-1985; dean of the Coastal Conference 1985-1991; and the N.C. Synod Council 1985-1988.
During his full-time ministry, he served as pastor of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Rural Hall; Our Redeemer in Greenville, which included pastor for students at East Carolina University; and Trinity Lutheran Church, Landis.
Since retirement, Nahouse has served as interim pastor for Amity Lutheran Church, Cleveland. Currently he is interim pastor at Mount Zion Lutheran Church, Richfield.
A covered dish luncheon and a time for fellowship will follow the service.
Immanuel PresbyterianCHINA GROVE óImmanuel Presbyterian Church of China Grove will celebrate 60 years of worship in its sanctuary at the annual homecoming celebration Sunday.
The Rev. Lemuel García-Arroyo, associate presbyter for the Central Neighborhood of Salem Presbytery, will preach for the 11 a.m. worship service.
García is a native of Mexico and a fourth-generation Presbyterian. He graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and was ordained as a Minister of the Word and Sacrament in 1996 at the Presbyterian Pan American School (a racial ethnic school of the Presbyterian Church [U.S.A.]) in Kingsville, Texas, where he served as chaplain and Bible instructor.
Prior to coming to Salem Presbytery, García served as the associate executive for Multicultural Ministries of the Synod of the Sun. He has served on committees at every level of the denomination, including the Hispanic Advisory Committee to the office of Hispanic Congregational Enhancement, the Advocacy Committee for Racial Ethnic Concerns, the Committee on Ecumenical Relations, the National Multicultural Network, Peacemaking and Immigration Concerns.
The church will receive two special offerings as part of the homecoming celebration. The 2-cents-a-meal hunger offering is a ministry of Salem Presbytery that relieves hunger locally and globally. The church will also accept canned goods for the West Rowan food bank of Rowan Helping Ministries.
The congregation will serve dinner in the fellowship hall after worship. The public is invited.

Salem Lutheran
Salem Lutheran Church invites the community to worship Sunday at 8:30 a.m. (contemporary service) and 10:45 a.m. (traditional service) and afterwards to enjoy a spaghetti luncheon from noon-1 p.m.
The youth will receive a love offering for the meal. The funds raised will help support the youth who are going to the National ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans next summer. While there, the youth will join more than 30,000 other youth from across the nation to worship, learn, and to serve the people in that area who are still recovering.
Salem is also hosting a Red Cross blood drive that same day from 1-5 p.m. at the church.

Central UMC
SPENCER ó Central United Methodist Church, 200 Fourth St., Spencer, will celebrate its 111th anniversary with a homecoming service Sunday, Oct. 19. Sunday service begins at 10:30 a.m.
Guest speaker will be Patrick McLaughlin, a Lutheran pastor who has served as an active duty Navy chaplain since 1992. Chaplain McLaughlin is a veteran of two Operation Iraqi Freedom deployments and has written a book, “No Atheists in Foxholes,” a collection of prayers and reflections from those two tours of duty.
Prior to deploying to Iraq, he served for three years as the chaplain to the president and first family at Camp David.
He has served with all five branches of the U.S. military during his career. Currently, he is serving as chaplain on the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush. He and his wife, Leigh, are the parents of five children ranging in age from elementaryschool to college. The family makes its home in Sneads Ferry, N.C.
Special music will be presented by the Jr./Sr. High, adult and handbell choirs of Central. A covered-dish luncheon will follow the service in the fellowship hall. The public is invited.

Organ concert
ALBEMARLE ó Ken Brown, music director at First Presbyterian Church in Albemarle, will present an organ concert in the church’s sanctuary at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19. Admission is free.
The concert will feature music from various centuries and countries. On First Presbyterian’s new Letourneau pipe organ, Brown will perform selections by Frescobaldi, Pachelbel, J. S. Bach, Franck and Alain. There will also be a transcription of Barber’s “Adagio for Strings.”
As music director at First Presbyterian Church, Brown leads all areas of music for adults and children. In addition to being an accomplished organist, Brown also plays piano and cello. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Central Michigan University as well as a master’s of music in organ performance from the University of Michigan.
Brown is a member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) Charlotte chapter, the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, the Chorister’s Guild and the Organ Historical Society.
In addition to his professional experience as an organist, Brown also has experience as a pipe organ technician and woodworker for organ builders.
Marable Memorial
KANNAPOLIS ó Marable Memorial AME Zion Church continues to celebrate its centennial this weekend.
A centennial worship service takes place Sunday at 11 a.m. Bishop Richard K. Thompson, presiding prelate of the Eastern North Carolina Episcopal District, will deliver the sermon. A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall.
There will be a centennial revival kick-off at 4 p.m. Sunday.The Rev. Dr. Michael E. Ellis, presiding elder of the Greensboro District in the Western North Carolina Conference of the Piedmont Episcopal District of the AME Zion Church, will speak. A reception will follow.
The revival will continue Oct. 13-16, with prayer and praise services at 7 p.m. followed by worship at 7:30. Speakers are as follows: Monday ó the Rev. John E. Houston retires
The members of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church Boyden Quarters, will celebrate and honor their pastor and first lady, the Rev. and Mrs. D. S. Houston, on Sunday. The service is a celebration of a half century of leadership and ministry as he retires after 50 years as pastor.
Recognition will begin today at 5 p.m., with a banquet at Bethel Baptist Church, Kannapolis. The celebration will continue on Sunday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Vincent Tillman of Life Giving Church of God of Concord.
At 3 p.m, Bishop Derek Kelly and the New Faith Full Gospel Church of Lexington will be in charge of the service.
Mount Moriah

Ressurection Life
The Edwards Family will be in concert Sunday at 6 p.m. at Ressurection Life Church, 216 S. Main St., Salisbury.
The Edwards Family, a bluegrass gospel band consisting of two teenage brothers, two teenage sisters and their mother, has been playing and writing songs for the past six years. Members were junior bluegrass champions of the Fiddlers Grove Convention in 2005, and have since won numerous individual awards and band awards from various North Carolina conventions.

ROCKWELL ó Lyerly Evangelical Church, 1320 Crescent Road, will have a Missions Conference this Sunday.
Missionaries who will be represented and their mission boards include: the Merle Dyes and Darrell Raceys with CHRISTar; the Cory Wengers and Ken Hollingsworths with Wycliffe Bible Translators; the David Alleys with OTAN/Bridging the World; Gray Savage with the City of Refuge; the Nathan Mikoskis with SEND International; Roy Phillips with Priority One India; and the Paul Allens, independent missionaries in the Ukraine.
Thirty-minute presentations will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until the worship hour at 10:30. Woody Wooldridge with OTAN/Bridging the World will preach, and special music will be presented by the City of Refuge children.
Lunch will be served at noon, followed by 30-minute presentations until 3:30 p.m.
Wooldridge and his wife, Chris, have been ministering to Christians in China since 1995. Through OTAN (Outreach to Asia Nationals), the Wooldridges have provided Bibles and Bible training, as well as summer camps for Chinese to learn English.
The public is invited to any part or all of the missions conference.

First Calvary Baptist
First Calvary Baptist Church invites area youth to participate in a day of praise and worship activities, in honor of Youth Sunday, Oct. 19.

A midday Praise Café and lunch featuring an “open mic” celebration will follow the morning service. Youth are invited to bring their favorite or original poetry, spoken word or gospel rap selections to share at lunch.
Afternoon events will begin at 2:45 p.m. with a Praise and Worship Service featuring the Rev. Timothy L. Bates, pastor of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Statesville, as a guest speaker. Bates is well known for his work with youth in Salisbury and Rowan County.Both morning and afternoon services will feature music by the FCBC Contemporary Choir and praise dances by Magnify! Lutheran Chapel
CHINA GROVE ó Lutheran Chapel Church in China Grove will celebrate homecoming Sunday.
The Rev. Constance Garrett will be the guest preacher at both the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. services.
Garrett, a lifelong Lutheran and the daughter of a Lutheran pastor, came to ordained ministry in mid-life. Settling in Enochville with her husband, John Mark Beam, following their graduation from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in 1999, Garrett served Lutheran Chapel even before she was ordained.
In an interim ministry that connected her with the congregation at China Grove, she became part of the fabric of life at this historic church, founded 1780.
During her interim ministry she was ordained into the ministry of Word and Sacrament at St. Enoch Lutheran Church and served both congregations on a part-time basis until Lutheran Chapel called its current pastor, the Rev. William Connelly.
In addition to her interim ministry at Lutheran Chapel, Garrett has served St. Enoch Lutheran, St. John’s Lutheran in Salisbury, and St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, Concord in part-time capacities.
She currently is the fulltime pastor at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Gold Hill, where she has served since August 2004.
The youth choir, directed by Sharon Connelly, and the chancel choir, co-directed by Ann Brown and Phyllis Daugherty, will sing. Brown is also church organist.
A picnic lunch will follow the later service.
