Students who are taking classes to strengthen their English are trying to help younger students better understand their environment.
On Dec. 14, eighth-graders from Kim Turnbull’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) class at Southeast Middle School took a trip to Knollwood Elementary School on Shue Road.
The ESOL students had worked energetically to create children’s books that illustrated and explained the water cycle. In a cross-curriculum project involving science, language arts and ESOL, the eighth-graders read their books to Ms. Spencer’s and Ms. Graham’s first-grade classes at Knollwood.
According to Turnbull, the visitors and the guests greatly enjoyed the morning, and many called it a wonderful learning experience.
Although the older students were initially hesitant, Turnbull said they are now eager to conduct similar projects at other schools.
