Pfeiffer University honored longtime banker and Pfafftown resident William G. White Jr. with an honorary doctor of humanities degree during its summer commencement ceremonies Aug. 2.
Approximately 535 adult students completed programs in the schools of graduate and adult studies, bringing the total number of 2008 Pfeiffer graduates to nearly 700. Two separate graduation ceremonies ó 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. ó were held in Merner Gymnasium on the university’s Misenheimer campus. White was honored during the 10:30 a.m. ceremony.
An avid Civil War historian, White was in the Navy and served in the Korean War. Through the Navy, his volunteer work and personal interests, he has traveled around the world several times, including more than 50 trips to Europe.
Following his military service, he enjoyed a distinguished career in banking spanning 40 years. He served for nearly 30 years as president of First Federal Savings Bank of Winston-Salem and continued working with them through mergers with Southern National Bank and BB&T.
He was also a trustee for the YMCA of Greater Winston-Salem and served on the national board of the YMCA for 10 years. His involvement with the YMCA led him to travel to the former Soviet Union, where he worked to reestablish the YMCA there and was instrumental in establishing the YMCA in the Ukraine. As a result of his relationships in the Ukraine, he personally recruited many students for Pfeiffer. His financial help for a German exchange student who wanted to attend Pfeiffer is just one example of his commitment to Pfeiffer and his community.
Since 1997, he has provided funding for the Eastern European Annual Scholarship at Pfeiffer University. Additionally, he has committed $1 million from his retirement plan to benefit Pfeiffer.

Koch scholarships
Three local students are among the 183 in the United States and Canada to receive Fred C. and Mary R. Koch Foundation Scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year.

Selection is based on strong academic records, extracurricular involvement, leadership and service. All recipients are dependents of employees of Koch Industries Inc.

UCC scholarships
The First United Church of Christ has awarded its annual scholarships to five members of its congregation.
The $1,000 merit awards were presented to Lauren Alexander, University of North Carolina at Asheville; Wesley Parrish and Andrew Carpenter, University of North Carolina at Charlotte; Catherine Schiemann, University of North Carolina at Greensboro; and Rebecca Schiemann, East Carolina University.
Parrish and Alexander also received James Lighbourne Scholarships sponsored by the Church Women of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ. This $500 award was presented to only 10 students in the conference.
